5 out of 5 stars Best gadget ever!   April 7, 2008

Just got my new ipod touch and I'm totally in love with my shiny new toy.

It plays music, you can scroll through the albums covers and does all the other things I'm sure you know it does.

I love being able to access and reply to my emails without have to go anywhere near my computer.

I love the way it shows the album covers when hooked up to my logic3 docking station.

this is a great piece if kit, to own one is to love one.

Only small negative, you can't play flash videos on line. But hey, that's what your computer is for.

5 out of 5 stars Beware the 2.0 update!   August 7, 2008

This is a fantastic device, and great with the 1.4 software as shipped, but bear in mind, that access to the App Store and Exchange email will require the 2.0 update at additional cost - it's not shipped with the device.

5 out of 5 stars It's not what you need - but it is what you want   May 26, 2008

So what's the point of the iPod Touch? It's an iPhone without the phone isn't it? That's certainly what it seemed when it first came on the market. At that point the small memory made it more an expensive Nano than a new kind of iPod. But the arrival of the 32Gb model changes all that. It now has a big enough capacity to be regarded as the ultimate iPod - with some fun extras.

And that was the breakthrough realisation I had: it was worth buying one just as an iPod. It is true that the other functionality far exceeds most other handheld devices. Its web browsing is beautiful, simple and quick, and you can zoom in or out of the page by a pinching motion of your fingers on the screen: extraordinary. The direct access to YouTube, Safari, e-mail etc is also elegant and fun.

But the fact remains that in the UK there are still relatively few Wi-Fi hot spots where you can enjoy this functionality. If you live in New York it would be a different matter. But even in London you would find a palm device which uses a phone connection more effective (and I gather the iPhone swaps between a phone web connection and Wi-Fi depending on the best available option).

So, for all the great features, the iPod Touch stands or falls by its status as an iPod. And here it stands tall. The quality of the display is gorgeous. All the search mechanisms delight you even the hundredth time you use them. Seeing the album art swivel to display track information, or the whole screen change format as you turn the device on it side, is simply magical. And when it comes to photos and video the screen really comes into its own. You could happily watch a movie on this screen.

Sometimes the touch sensitivity can frustrate: you scroll through playlists by touch, but you also select by touch - so getting the right kind of touch is a knack. And sometimes the responsiveness of the screen to touching the pause and play buttons isn't all it could be. But you'll find yourself forgiving these lapses.

If you regard your current iPod as simply an MP3 player then you have no need for the Touch. But if you also regard your iPod as the kind of design achievement that demonstrates that humans are still evolving, then a Touch will confirm your status as a top notch Homo Sapiens.

5 out of 5 stars The Touch deserves its hype.   July 9, 2008

Let me start by saying that the iPod Touch was as good as I'd hoped it would be. And I had high hopes!

My initial concerns were that the touch screen wouldn't be particularly sensitive, the navigation would be cumbersome, the quality of video playback would be poor, importing files would be difficult and the battery life would be limited. I told you I had high hopes! However after having the 32GB version for over a month now, I can confirm that my concerns have been well and truly allayed.

The touch screen is as good as you'll find on the market. It's sensitive to touch without being over the top and what has probably pleased me most, is that even when you're clicking on small links in the web browser, its accuracy is outstanding. Wirelessly surfing the internet is a breeze and the addition of motion sensors to flip the screen and view websites in landscape mode is a real bonus.

Navigating between albums, video, e-mail, internet etc. is perfectly easy, with options to select from artist, album, genre etc. It's not difficult to find your way back to the start or between albums etc. The best endorsement for this is that I've not had to read the instructions yet, it really is that simple to use.

Using iTunes as the primary source of importing music and videos on to the Touch is, again, as easy as you would have hoped it to be. I had a lot of wma files on my computer and even converting these to m4p files was a simple, albeit lengthy, case of drag and drop. There are a number of websites that allow you to convert DVDs and video to the iPod format, which are very simple to use. Again, this did take me some time to convert, although it was worth it in the end.

My first outing with the Touch was on a long train journey to and from London. During the trip I listened to a few albums, watched a full movie and also watched some other videos that I'd put on the Touch earlier. The screen is a good size for viewing movies in transit and apart from the sun shining on the screen (yes, the sun does shine sometimes in the UK) I had no complaints or tired eyes. By the time I had got home, I still had plenty of battery life left.

I can't recommend the iPod Touch enough. To date, I have four movies, a load of albums and some photos stored on mine and it's only about 1/3 full. If you can afford it, go for the bigger capacity as you'll want to take advantage of every single feature that the Touch offers.

I have a 32gb iPod touch and to be honest it's perfect, I have just bought the update to 2.0 and it's transformed this stunning media player into a gaming machine and full PDA. 32GB gives me enough room for 12 full length movies, several TV Shows, 1500 songs and still have room for more. The touch screen is flawless and reponsive, the features such as Mail, and the Safari browser make it perfect for surfing the net. Not forgetting that this is the best iPod ever made, yes it's still only 32GB but to be honest it's enough for most people.

Best bit of all, Apple quote 22 hours music playback, well I get 25 hours with little hassle, and Video playback is 5 hours 30 min's. This is an expensive device but it's worth the money in every way.
