5 out of 5 stars Love it!   February 27, 2008

I bought my new iPod from Argos 3 weeks ago and am pleased to say that I love it! I decided to get myself a new iPod because I was running out of space on my old 4gb nano and my music collection has expanded in recent years. There was nothing wrong with the old nano but comapring it with the the new iPod classic in terms of price I realised I paid too much. I bought my nano refurbished forr 149 and I pay 159 for the new classic and get a lot more for my money.

The features on the classic are good and I like the cover flow which makes browsing through albums a lot easier. Videos also look stunning on it but they do sap the battery life. I have some tv shows and music videos on mine and they look great! Photos are a breeze and the new version of itunes makes ripping cds to your iPod even easier. When iPods were first around I really didn't get the hype but in the past 2 years or so I've been thoroughly converted! I could not live without mine now.

Music playback is of the same great quality that Apple always does. My only negative point is that the upper volume limit is not as loud as it used to be but unless you listen to music at ear-drum smashing levels you've got nothing to worry about. Also, the new headphones that come with the iPod aren't the best in the world so I use my own. I find the ones that are supplied tend to fall out and don't do much to block out external noise. I would recommend going for some headphones that sit directly in the ear-canal. They don't have to be expensive but they will improve your listening experience by blocking out external noise.

The design of the iPod classic is very good. Fully cased in metal and smooth to the touch. At this point I would advise potential iPod purchasers to to get a good quality case to protect it. After all, you spend all that money on the iPod...it's worth keeping it protected.

Menu navigation on the classic can be a little sluggish sometimes but most of the time is very good. I particularly like the search function. Very useful when you have thousands of songs. Thanks Apple!

Overall, I am very pleased with my new iPod. There are few faults that I can find with it apart from the ones I've mentioned above. If you want a solid piece of kit that can store everything: music, videos, pictures, contacts etc. then go for the iPod classic. You can't go far wrong.

The classic is slimline, compact, good-looking and very, very cool! There were initial bugs with the unit but by now those have been sorted and I've found no faults with mine.

5 out of 5 stars My first Ipod...and i wouldn't turn back!   May 8, 2008

I have had mp3 players of course and they were fab, but my last was only 2gb and i ran out of space on it so instead of upgrading to one of the same make but larger memory i thought i'd buy an ipod (against what my parents thought (even though i'm 19 they still try and decide what i buy!)). For the price of the sony one i wanted cos i knew they had excellent sound dynamics, i thought i'd put 10 to it and buy an ipod which had 10x the memory capacity of the sony. Now i have my ipod its great, cos i love watching movies on it and listening to all my favourite tunes, which i now have room for. 80gb, and i have loads of tracks and movies on it already and it's Nowhere near 1/4 full! I managed to get a 2 hour movie on it, using only 500MB which is slightly less than half of 1GB! Now i can watch my movies in bed when i cant sleep or listen to my fave music, absolutely wonderful, i won't go back now i have my ipod!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant piece of kit but itunes does require effort.   May 11, 2008

Like alot of people who have already reviewed, i used to hate ipods & swore i'd never get one! But my massive music collection(45GB, 7148 songs) made it the only option.

I've previously had a 20GB Creative Zen years ago & a Sony 20GB until i bought this, so i'm used to music software. Itunes is a bit more effort but once your willing to take the time to tag your music, i spend a solid week correcting, filling in blanks & adding album artwork, it's worth it. The Coverflow part is excellent when all the artwork is added, but it has to be done manually for the music already contained on your computer, as the artwork & tags can only be got automatically for cd's ripped with itunes. Couple of issues: 1. when you import an album but it mysteriously doesn't show up, turn off the browser so the music is one big list & scroll to the bottom & hey, there it is because more than likely the tracks weren't tagged in the first place. 2. for some reason albums will spilt the odd time, 1 track on it's own & rest together even though the tags are the same, in that case i just deleted them & re-import.

When it comes to videos itunes is strange to, but again with work it can be done. I use a program called 'any video converter' to convert to mp4 video then it can be imported to itunes. The quality when played on the ipod is absolutely class!

The extras are cool, games, quizes, calendar etc, & the screen is brilliant, crystal clear!

I've no complaints whatsoever with the sound quality or the volume level, i put it up near maximum just to see & honestly if it's not enough you must have hearing damage. I did a sound comparison with my Sony & it's negiable difference, slight tone difference probably due to eq settings. But do yourself a favour & invest in descent earphones!

I had reservations in buying this but i have to say i'm very impressed.

5 out of 5 stars How to revolutionise the way you listen to music...   October 19, 2007

There's a very good reason why the iPod is the market leader... it's a quite brilliant piece of technology. Beautifully designed, simple to use and incredibly powerful it's the only sensible choice for anyone who wants to carry their music collection with them wherever they go. And, of course, you can also add huge numbers of photos, your address book & diary and even compressed videos.

But to get the best out of this wonderful piece of kit requires thought, effort and expense. Thought, in that the creation of your iTunes database on your PC (which drives what's on your iPod) is something you'll use for years, probably decades. iTunes' and its MP4 format for music storage ain't going away but technologies (and music player hard disk sizes) will change and to keep pace with this in the future you need to ensure two things: firstly that your music is transferred into iTunes at the highest quality level - i.e. 320 kbps wherever possible (sounds over the top today, but it won't be in a few years' time... witness Apple's recent move from 128 to 256 kbps for its music store downloads) - and, secondly, that your iTunes database is organised logically, with consistent and relevant genres etc.

Effort, in that importing your tracks into iTunes needs real work to ensure that your music collection can be accessed quickly and effectively. In particular, you'll need to categorise your tracks into their correct genres & release dates and, ideally, into some sort of star rating system - all of which can take an enormous amount of time. But, if you're prepared to spend the time, iTunes will then produce as many customised playlists as you want, either automatically or manually, based on a huge number of possible criteria. Want to hear all your favourite rock tracks released in the past 5 years, or the best tracks from one or more artists etc. etc.?... iTunes will produce playlists for them and will automatically update them as you add more tracks. Not just incredibly clever but the key to a total transformation in the way you access your music collection.

Expense, because once you've done this and then had the fun of creating dozens of playlists that deliver exactly what you want, your iPod will very rapidly become your main means of listening to music and, as a result, you'll need additional kit. First off, you'll need some form of protective cover to avoid damaging it while you carry it around; next you'll need connections into your hi-fi & stereo units, ideally through one or more chargeable iPod docks, so that you can listen to it around the house; then you'll need an FM transmitter so that you can listen to it in your car plus a set of portable speakers so that you can listen to it in hotel rooms etc.; then, you'll probably want to upgrade Apple's bundled headphones to hear your collection in all its glory while walking, jogging or on the train or plane; and, finally, if you don't own one already, you MUST invest in some sort of back-up device to keep your precious iTunes collection safe from the vagaries of your PC's hard drive because, after all that time spent inputting and categorising your music, you most certainly don't want to go through it all again.

Sounds daunting? Well, the pay-offs for all this effort and expense are nothing short of sensational... you'll be able to listen to exactly what you want, how you want, virtually anywhere you go, forever... and all at the touch of your iPod's gloriously easy to use click wheel.

This is my very first iPod and I have to say it's absolutely brilliant. 80gb for 144.00 is a bargain compared to other shops. The product itself is sleek ans shiny although the metallic silver back attracts marks and fingerprints. Definitely invest in buying a case or silicon skin for this. The headphones are fine to me, unlike some people who think they're not loud enough. Buy it !
