Best unit for price - Buy one - you won't be disappointed. July 6, 2007 Ms. A. Wood 23 out of 23 found this review helpful
I've been waiting for this speaker system for about 6 months since I read about it in January. It's been available on US amazon but not shipping to the UK until now. I've had lots of griffin bits and pieces over the years to go with various macs, and they are always well designed and well made. I had previously bought (and returned) a specktone, which was disappointing in many respects (not least that it was DOA). The build quality wasn't as good as this, it wasn't as heavy, and had already developed hairline cracks in the mitred corners of the box body when it arrived. The Amplifi has a really clever little transformer/plug that has lots of different clip-on plug pin configurations for different countries, so no need for plug and separate heavy transformer. It has a single easy to use on/off and volume control, and quite the best foam supports that fit behind the dock connector for different widths of ipod. They fit snuggly into an oval slot in the body, and are easy to swap over. Great feature as we have 2 different ipods in the house. Other speakers I've seen have different supports but they stick on permanently - which is hopeless. Remote is good too. You don't need to be continually fiddling with ipod clickwheel, which I worried would put stress on the dock connector. It has on/off, volume and fwd/rew buttons. We plugged it in straight out of the box, and had it going in about 30 secs. It's quite heavy, and feels really substantial (no jumping off the shelf at high volume). This is good as the sound it delivers is quite unbelievable for such a compact unit. Box didn't get hot either, even after several hours use. Have played loads of different kinds of music over the evening, and it's brilliant with all of them. Bass in fantastic. We used to bemoan the loss of proper bass in early digital recordings but it's so good now we've stopped grumbling. Really pleased with this. Looks good, sounds great, built to last, good value. Fantastic!
High quality sound July 12, 2007 Dematerialiser (UK) 28 out of 29 found this review helpful
This is probably the best 100 I've ever spent on audio equipment - purely based on the quality of the sound. After scouring the web for reviews of various ipod speaker systems, I discovered that there are a thousand-and-one to choose from - most with cheap plastic looks (including the much applauded and highly expensive grey plastic BOSE speakers, and a number of units that look like walkman accessories from the 1980's). But, amongst the others, the Griffin Amplifi seemed to have universal approval for the quality of the sound which, afteral, is what it's all about. Although it's low on extra gadget-geek features (no 'bass boost', no video out, etc) the money saved by not overloading the Amplifi with gadgetry has all gone into the wooden cabinet, speakers (including an amazing bass reflex underneath) and an external style and finish that would please most fans of high-end separates systems and serious 'audiophiles'. But, on to the important bit: the sound. I have most of my music encoded at high quality (well over 224kbps) and I haven't heard better sound from my mp3's in a long time - I was worried that with any small set of ipod speakers I would end up with tinny-sounding voices and crackling distorted bass, or both. With the Amplifi even songs with purposefully overloaded bass holds together. The only trouble I've had is with the odd track that's been encoded with an artificially raised volume level or tracks encoded at lower bitrates which do produce some bass distortion (as you would expect), but this is easy to correct somewhat by using the EQ presets in itunes. What amazes me is that the sound depth and clarity seems to rival a large separates system - my main system is a Denon and I would put it on a parr with the Amplifi. The upper volume limit is obviously not as high as a separates system, but easily loud enough for most parties or if you just want to do some serious headbanging :) I already love this item - it arrived quickly (from Amazon's seller eoutlet-uk - thanks for a fast service!) and in a quality package which only adds to the illusion that you've spent more than double the money. It was quick and easy to set up, fits my 80gb ipod perfectly, is nice and heavy with a quality feel, handy remote and sleek looks. I've had it on for over 8 hours a day for almost a week now, playing any one of about 9000 songs at random. Fantastic.
Bose Beater !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! December 1, 2007 Mr. A. S. Dent (Northants UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you are looking for something to bring your ipod to life then this is for you, at half the price of the Bose soundock it sounds every bit as good! it has to be the bargain of the century, buy now before Griffin cotton on to how good it is and hike the price up!!. After reading countless reviews on the Griffin I took the plunge and ordered one without even hearing it, so when it arrived I was a little nervous but the minute I opened the box I knew I had something good. It is a solid weighty unit that feels as if it belongs on the shelf in a B&O shop and I reckon if it had a B&O badge on it people would believe it! It punches out deep room filling base that seems impossible to come from something the size of a shoe box! crank it up and it fills the room....the best 100 I have ever spent!!!
Got an iPod? Want GREAT sound at home? GET THIS! February 10, 2008 P. Streatfield (London) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
OK - I was searching for a simple, not too expensive (i.e. not Bose), good quality sound dock for my iPod. I read lots of reviews. I even managed to get my hands on a Bose SoundDock to listen to (and there's no denying they have great sound quality, but for 200+??). Lots of the reviews of this system elsewhere go on about the cost. They say what a great "budget" item this is. To be honest, that put me off at first because I thought - "I don't want budget, I want BEST but for less". I took the plunge and bought this from these guys. And boy, I was impressed. Even the box is comes in is groovy and exudes quality! This is a very solidly built, well designed, quality product. Heavy, simplistic but functional in design. But the best thing is the truly excellent sound quality. The Amplifi goes really quite loud - loud enought to fill the floor of our house (open plan 60' room) with as much sound as to make it necessary to shout! Place it on a nice solid surface for the bass to really resonate. And that is another of it's plus points - the 5" dedicated woofer underneath. Fantastic. If you want a bells and whistles, radio containing, display showing, light show of a docking system - buy something else. If you want quite possible the best 100 worth of engineered audio excellence you can get for an iPod, press that button at the top of the page now. You won't regret it.
