5 out of 5 stars Perfection in a box   April 11, 2007

Having experimented with many different headphones from many different manufacturers and having read more than enough reviews on the multitude of headphones on the market, I decided to purchase the Shure E2C headphones. My last pair were the Sony MDR EX71SL and they were at the time, a very good pair of headphones. Once I had received the Shures I plugged them in and gave them a whirl, and I was astounded by the quality of music that was coming out of them. All parts of the music sounded clearer and more defined, and whilst the bass element was not as heavy as the Sonys, they are ample for the type of music I normally amuse myself with. There were elements of the music I had not heard before with other headphones and even coming out of my home speakers. It just draws you deep into the music and won't let go.
I did a back to back test with my previous pair, and the difference between the two were just astonishing - I don't know how I managed to live without the Shures!
Admittedly it took me about a week to work out which ear piece i needed (I use the medium foam ones) but it worth trying them all out to see. The hard plastic ones look good but fall out quite easily without much movement.
The noise isolation aspect is stonking - I was in a friends car with his music on LOUD (and he likes his hard house) and all i could hear.. nay.. all I could feel was the bass shaking through my body. I couldn't hear any of the mids or tweeter sounds nor even the bass!!
For the price on Amazon you cannot go wrong considering you will be paying twice the price from the Apple shop or similar prices for top end sonys or sennheisers from any retail store.
Get them!

First the phones are an odd fit with the wire going round the back of your ear but as soon as you get one of the three sets of ear buds that works best then you're on your way. Some say the wire is flimsy but they don't seem so as it's much thicker than any earphone I've had, time will tell. Beware they do isolate the outside world very well which won't make you feel guilty about ignoring on the street market researchers or beggars playing the Hovis theme on a mouldy recorder.
The sound quality you get from these phones is very transparent and neutral in flat studio monitor type response, you know you're stepping into the realms of true high fidelity when you can crank up the volume and everything just sounds better with no fatigue on the ears or distortion in sound. These phones will also revile how good your sound source is as my old Shuffle now sounds a little wooden however they did seem like they needed a few days to break in. Although the phones do lack a bit of clout in the bass end and sparkle in the high end its still an honest frequency response with no colouration in sound. If you want a wider frequency range (beyond 128kb MP3) then the E3's are the next step.
If you want big BOOM-BOOM for listening to music with a low dynamic range then look elsewhere but if you want to go up a notch from your regular earphones and hear your music in a much more detail then for 35 with a two year Shure warranty you can't go wrong with these beauties.

5 out of 5 stars Comfy, robust, and great sound   September 29, 2006

I've had these for about a month and I am delighted with the whole package. Once the optimal earpiece 'cover' has been found, the earbud fits tightly but comfortably into each ear. Ambient noise is almost totally eliminated. This means the volume needed is quite low compared with on-ear or just-in-ear earphones. These handle detail effortlessly - for the money by far the best I've owned. The carry case is tough and easy to use and keeps the earbuds safe and tidy. The only downside is the little sticky gauze filters that fit onto the earbud opening (to keep them clean). These have come adrift: one fell out completely and the other was about to! You might want to think about using these if you don't fancy one coming out in your ear?? In conclusion, very good value for money, with effortless bass and treble - none of which is overpowering, harsh, fatiguing or brash. In a word - excellent!

*** EDIT *** Just to give an update. It is now 27th Feb 2007 (about 4 months since the review above), and these earphones just keep getting better! I keep them in their little case and take care when I use them - mostly twice a week at the gym. The cable is getting as hot as I am - due to my exercising (body heat) - when I'm on the treadmill, so perhaps you could expect the cable to become brittle eventually. However, so far so good!. I find the in-ear design stays put, even when I'm bouncing around, and the behind-ear-route for the cables fits in nicely with my mode of training. Still in a word - excellent! ***END ***

5 out of 5 stars What a difference!   March 29, 2007

I have had these for around 3 months now and they are amazing! I am rediscovering my music all over again. I got bored of the fontopia earbuds falling out all the time and for 35 these seemed like a bargain.

I wasnt disappointed, the sound quality is amazing! the treble and bass are perfect. I know there have been lots of people saying the bass isnt as good as they might have expected, but if you get the fit right (I use the foam tips) the bass is perfect, not too punchy not too overwhelming not tiring. I listen to a very wide range of music and am really happy with the quality these headphones produce, listening to daft punk and led zepellin sounds exactly as i expect it was intended to be heard.

They are comfortable to wear, dont fall out, you dont realise your wearing them half the time and sound better then any 'cans' I have had in the past.

If you want bassy earbuds get some Koss 'the plug', which do nothing for the music but do punch bass into your head. If you want your music to sound as though Metallica are playing a small gig on the bus just for you then get these. With the foam tips in you completely drown out any ambience. I nearly walked into a trench the other day cause I didnt see or hear 2 guys with jackhammers digging up the road! And I wasnt even listening to anything loud, just miles davis!

The only downside, as others have said, is that you discover how crap your music sounds at a low bitrate, and you may have to rip your cds again at 256 at least, if not 320kbps.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, just brilliant!   August 16, 2007

I think these headphones are absolutely brilliant. I previously had Sennheiser CX300 headphones with my ipod, until they were stolen, so after reading through many reviews, the best of which was in a 'What Hi-fi' magazine, rated 5 stars (and used to cost 90!), I decided to go with the Shure's. I couldn't have made a better choice for 37 including postage, bargain, especially considering my CX300's cost 40. I found the CX300's give a lot of bass, but can become tiresome after a while, very boomy and muffled. However with the Shure's, everything really is precise and very clear. Initially, I thought the Shure headphones didn't give that much bass compared to the Sennheiser's, which I was disappointed with, but after the correct pair of sleeves were used (there are 9 pairs after all) the bass became a lot more evident. I thought after using the smallest black sleeves I had a comfortable fit, but I couldn't believe how much better the foam sleeves were. I now use the smallest of foam sleeves, and think they are amazing! If customers complain about a lack of bass, I can assure you there isn't, you are using the wrong sleeves. I admit it takes a while getting used to how the Shure's fit in your ear, and it is quite fiddly choosing the correct sleeves to begin with, but believe me, stick with them, get the right set of sleeves, and they will reward you. These headphones truly are amazing, and compared to the Sennheiser's... actually, there is no comparison. At 37, you really cannot go wrong... buy these!!!
