5 out of 5 stars Klipsch iGroove iPod Speaker System (silver or black)   August 28, 2007

I'd been searching for ages for an iPod speaker dock system that would rival and maybe even replace my old separates hi-fi system that had started to show its age. (I work in the film industry and used to run a recording studio so good sound is very important to me). I was pretty thorough in my research, home-tested two different units, became a pain to many a shop assistant and also poured over reviews on the net researching which units to test. I finally bought the Klipsch iGroove iPod Speaker System from Amazon and am very happy with it indeed. In fact, I think it is the best sounding iPod speaker dock that I found to date and recommend it most highly.

Speaker docks have two design limitiations:
1) The size of the dock tends to limit the bass response.
2) The way many docks connect to the iPod is via a male socket that plugs into the base of the iPod. This socket is often hard-wired to the pcb of the dock system, is subject to stress when the iPod is plugged in or unplugged and therefore can fail after light use.

The iGroove has a bass port at the back of the unit which is very effective. Additionally, the iPod fits snugly into the cradle on the unit, with a neat slider arrangement embedded into this cradle being adjusted up or down depending on which iPod you fit. (I use this unit with a 5g Video iPod and a 4g 40 Gig iPod just fine). The actual male connector is fixed firm and has no play to it. By adjusting the slider to the correct hight, you can drop the iPod into the unit and take it out again without causing any stress at all to the plug. Also, if you adjust the slider correctly, the iPod cannot move at all when connected, thereby limiting the potential for any stress to the connector.

Untis I tested included the following:
Monitor Audio i-deck Speaker Dock for iPod (I actually bought one of these and although it sounded great, I returned it after a couple of months as the connector failed - a common fault according to Newsgroups)
JBL Onstage II - iPod Speaker System - (very dissappointing sound and really lacked in bass)
JBL Radial - High Performace iPod Speaker System - (although more powerful, still not as impressive as I'd hoped)

Smaller, cheaper units sounded smaller and cheaper! I also read some pretty worrying comments from users of iRythhm regarding failure of the connector...

In summary:-

Pros:
Great sound
Small size
Good price
Excellent build quality

Cons:
Remote is a bit fussy - have to point it directly to the unit as it is infra-red (the Monitor Audio iDock used an RF remote which was much better).

Very pleased with it, sound is truly amazing for such a small unit, great bass (much better than the Bose, I think, and cheaper too) and very little distortion at high volume. It's very close to the Apple hi-fi for sound quality but is much smaller and the ipod sits securely in front, not balanced on top (significant risk of damage in a house with 2 small kids rushing about). The ability to use other MP3 players or laptops with it was also a big plus. The only niggle is that the remote is tiny and easy to lose, so a place to store it in or on the unit would have been helpful.

Klipsch brand was recommended by a friend who told me his brother did the pepsi challange in a shop (klipsch v bose) for sound quality and felt the klipsch system was better. I checked the reviews on Amazon and made the choice to go for the iGroove. I was not disappointed, absolutely brilliant sound quality. The only negative is the limited control ability of the remote and I'm only mentioning this as I don't have all my play lists set up, so I have to nip back and forth to my iPod if I want to change artist or anything, and the adaptor for the 3rd GEN iPod nano video is quite tight fitting, making gettting the iPod in and out of the system a bit fiddly. But overall, minor cons.... looks good, sounds even better.

Have just bought the Klipsch iGroove, after reading dozens of good reviews on the 'Klipsch iGroove Black' page - interesting reading!! This one complements my new silver classic perfectly, and the sound is really good. The unit is attractive to look at, and I cannot fault it at all. Amazon price makes it even better.

Having recently being ripped off in the US with extremely poor sounding mini speakers for around 70 I was cautious of repeating the event with this US branded speaker.
The unit I bought was sold as sub standard, possibly with small marks and damaged box. In fact it was like new all round with only slight "strap" marks on the box. The benefit was the sub 70 price! Thank You Amazon....!

Out of the box the unit is neat and single piece. It comes with a laptop style power adaptor and mains plug so that take up a bit of desk space too.
Overall the iGroove looks compact and neat on the top of the kitchen counter or desk space, so long as you can hide the power brick somewhere.

There is an in built carry notch in top of the rear panel and several iPod adaptors (nano & mini) that can be slotted in the interface opening along with a combined lead and adaptor for connecting to standard "other" Mp3 via the earphone socket.
The manual is a slim affair but clear with good diagrams and multi lingual.
As stated in other reviews the small remote can not be housed anywhere in the main iGroove casing and is quite directional, in that it must be pointed directly at the Klipsch logo to work.
The remote does not however allow full control of the menu system, just the tracks selected, volume and play controls.
Distance with the remote does not seem to be a problem it works from the other side of the kitchen and is easier when you need to pause music or move to next track.

In fact its only really when you connect the iGroove up that you realise why a remote is useful...The iGroove has a truly room filling rich sound that can not be best appreciated with you head stuck next to the the sound outlet. The remote keeps you at more than arms length.

I spent many years as a musician and love the sound of realistic rich and deep music that brings you as close to the band/orchestra as possible As a result I'm a bit fussy with how music sounds.

The iGroove though is just awesome in its ability to present a clear full and deep sound stage from such a small unit. OK it can't possibly shift as much air as a large audiophile speaker - but the quality of sound is just astounding from the small ported enclosure.
Set on top of a Kitchen worktop the grille points slightly upward toward your ear and the iGroove is great in this position, deep rich bass penetrates gently without causing rumbles, mid range sound swells the air around you and crisp treble highlights pierce through to tinkle on your eardrum and its oh so clear....

Whatever other drawbacks the iGroove has (clunky power brick and dubious remote being the only two I an think of) you buy a speaker for its sound and the sound of this iGroove far outweighs any possible drawback.
Before buying the iGroove I had not heard of, or heard, any 'Klipsch' products - but if its product range is anything like this excellent value iGroove all in one speaker system, I am mightily impressed with the brand.

I highly recommend the iGroove.
