Proof that reading reviews can be misleading March 3, 2008 Archbishop (Sheffield, UK) 25 out of 25 found this review helpful
I did a lot of research before deciding to purchase a Zen 8GB - mostly (Though not exclusively) from customers here on Amazon. There is clearly a 2-way split of opinion between the 'Don't touch with a barge pole' and the 'Absolutely fabulous' camps. Consequently its virtually impossible to decide what to do. I tried to get Amazon to reveal the scale of Zen returns but they either couldn't or wouldn't reveal such information. In the end, with the knowledge that getting Amazon to take it back and give a refund wasn't going to be a problem, I decided that the only sure way to find out what this little MP3 player was really like was to go ahead and get one. As a result I have now fallen into the 'Absolutely fabulous' camp. As soon as I got it I did an immediate firmware upgrade before doing anything else and my experience is in agreement with all the 5 star reviewers here - it is just stunning. I haven't got round to reading any instructions yet - its really easy to get to grips with the menu system though maybe if I had read them I would have discovered that plugging an SD card in with the power on isn't a good idea - it causes a reboot and loses all the Radio presets that you've carefully named! (Not a criticism that - just my stupidity) Overall money well spent - get one!
Stunning Little MP3 Player October 4, 2007 Mr. Ceiron Galbraith (england) 52 out of 55 found this review helpful
I have been in the market for an easy to use, small and stylish mp3 player for a while. Ipods and sony's own players come with awful bloatware and are very limiting. The only real alternative was creative and as soon as they brought out the Zen i knew i had found a winner. The firstt thing that strieks you si the size, its tiny, yet still big enough to be usable. The screen is clear and bright and battery life is excellent. It doesnt try to copy the ipod control system but uses its own tailored to a very nice menu system that is fully customisable. It comes with its own software but will sync with most music players or you can just drag and drop onto the player. The sd hc slot adds the possibility of up to 64gb extra storage. The player starts in under 5s and is very smooth, video playback is crisp and clear and viewable. Music playback is superb and plenty loud enough. It has a lto of extras liek a calender, contact list, alarm. I could go on and on but all you need to know is this player lives up to the specs every bit and is well worth the rrp. A product better then an ipod any day.
Great flash memory MP3 & Video Player, better than iPod March 4, 2008 A. Molloy (Cambridgeshire UK) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I really like my Creative Zen 8Gb. Over the years I've had several MP3 players. My first a 128mb no name player, then 256mb MPIO player, a Sansa e140 and now the Zen. I like to listen to music in the move and when motorcycle touring so I want a player with Flash memory so there are no moving parts to damage. The Zen is a delight to use. The menus are clear and easy to read without glasses. The sound quality is very good. The Radio works well and Videos are surprisingly good to watch. I did have a moment when it blacked out on day 1, due to me trying too many options at once on Windows Media Player. Since then the latest firmware uploaded automatically and it works fine. I like the fact that the SD card contents are not integrated. I keep my ripped Vinyl and my Video's on the SD Card and my CD Catalogue on the Zen. The Zen reads the Folders on the SD Card so id3-Tag info such as Album Art will not appear. The Zen Media Explorer software is OK but I find Windows Media Player 11 easier to use. The Creative sync option is displayed in VGA format which is wasted on my 19" screen. However the Zen Media converter makes up for it. I have shopped around quite a bit before deciding what to buy. The Zen has better sound than the iPod and it has a Radio and the ability to be used as a Voice Recorder. The Zen also takes SD cards to expand the memory. My 8Gb Transcend SDHC card cost me 17 from Amazon ands it works a treat. The speed of data transfer is extremely good. I can sync my CD's to the Zen and my Vinyl and Movies to the SDHC card. I can keep different Music collections on different SD cards which I like. Surprisingly my wife likes the Zen so much she wants one and she is a real Technophobe. Don't be put off by the negative reviews from iPod fans. The Zen is a bargain. You don't have to get tied in to iTunes and Creative never ask for you Bank information or keep a record of what you listen to.
Fantastic little unit October 5, 2007 F. Pearce (London) 31 out of 34 found this review helpful
My ancient, original 'Zen Touch' was never quite the same since we were both run over by a van 3 years ago - the fact the player was actually crushed by a rear wheel & still worked (unlike my arm) is testament to Creative's build-quality. However, the buttons started acting up, and ever since I've been looking for a replacement. Surprisingly tricky. I am very fussy about sound-quality - I use an MP3 player to listen to music, not as a fashion statement - which means the ubiquitous iPods & there laughable sound (& build) quality were out, along with a fair few more imaginative choices. Creative has been producing some odd-balls for some time which didn't suit me, but this unit does virtually everything (and rather more) that I think is important in an MP3 player: good battery life, excellent sound quality, and I'd assume good build going on past experience & it certainly feels as solid as something as small & light as this can be. The FM tuner has excellent reception in my experience along with the same quality sound as the MP3 bit, although a nice extra feature would've been picking up station names too. I can't comment on the quality of the headphones as I haven't even tried them (I use Shure 'E5c's - amazing little things if you don't mind the cost!). The screen is very clear and it displays the (now-deleted!) photos that come with it very well; I assume that as the sound & picture is top-notch, the video play-back thingy should be so too, although I haven't tried it... I think there's software to convert video files into whatever it is that it uses, which looked fairly standard anyway? I just dump MP3 file directly to it as if it were hard-drive so I don't know much about the software side of things... In summary, definitely an excellent little player if what you want from an MP3 player is to play your MP3s in top-quality sound without running out of batteries, and it seems pretty good at the other non-MP3-playing things you might want your MP3 player to do. More memory would have been nice, but then I should've waited for the 16GB, and I suppose the storage is effectively infinitely expandable through SD & SDHC cards...
Excellent December 15, 2007 R. A. Shacklock (Onchan, Isle of Man United Kingdom) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I saw that the Sony Walkman had more 5 star ratings than the Zen and I was tempted, but the fact that the Zen has a radio and the option of increased storage with a memory card won the day. I'm glad it did. I find the sound quality very good, the build quality seems fine, it is small and neat, the supplied earphones are quite decent for stationary use - they are not very secure on the move, the screen is clear and gives a good picture, the FM radio works well and has plenty of preselects, and I found the supplied software easy to use though you can 'drag and drop' if you prefer. I don't find using a memory card any problem - you just select it on the menu, click on 'browse' and you get a list of everything on the card ready to select. (You can sub-divide the contents into different folders if you wish). Downsides? Well it doesn't come with any sort of case, but neither do the alternatives. You can order one cheaply from Amazon. A lot of WMV files need to be converted -something about the bitrate - but the supplied software will do it easily. Knowing what I now know I'd buy it again - no hesitation.
