5 out of 5 stars A legitimate piece of hi-fi   March 30, 2007

Having researched by purchase extensively, I am at a loss when reading negative comparisons in terms of the i-pod's sound quality relative to its man competitors.

I spent around a month demo-ing which DAP to spend my hard-earned cash on, and in the process heard the best of the rest...models from Sony, Creative, i-river, Toshiba, etc...

Based on the sound performance and sound performance alone (using my Etymotic ER-4P earphones), the i-pod would still have been my number one choice, although not by much. The Sony and Tosh were on a par, although the songs ripped using Apple's lossless encoder were, (unsurprisingly), simply superior, and with an 80gb drive, the capacity is enough to store around 300 albums...more than I own anyway.

The sound quality achievable by this thing absolutely amazed me. STREETS ahead of most of its competitors....clarity, tone, dynamics were positively analog in their presentation...a true pierce of hi-fi...not a claim that can be made by any of the others.

The fact that itunes is also the best, most user-friendly piece of software is an added bones.

If you really need a Swiss Army knife of a player, then the i-pod s not for you. This is not by any stretch the most feature-rich player, it has to be said.

However, if you, like me, simply want a portable version of your CD collection, with a strong emphasis on sound quality....then the i-pod is the ONLY choice.

I have been an ipod fan for many years, but have always found the large ones less appealing; I had an iPod mini, my wife has an iPod nano, and my son an iPod shuffle.

However, the allure of 80Gb compared to my puny 6Gb, and the promise of a large colour screen versus my small black and white one persuaded me to sell my iPod mini and upgrade. And the battery life on my mini was always a disappointment.

What a fantastic peice of kit! The battery lasts for ever! (I've only ever got it down to half-full, and that was on a trip to Holland). The video is brilliant on the screen and now that you can put 640x480 video on it, is brilliant on a TV too. Even the games available to buy on iTunes Store are excellent quality - I particularly recommend Texas Hold'em.

And my biggest concern - the size of the thing - really is not a worry any more. If the last time you looked seriously at a full-size iPod was a generation or two ago, you need have no concerns - they really are alot slimmer and lighter.

I went for the 80Gb one because a) it's nearly three times the hard disk size for only 65 more, and b) because the battery in the 80Gb is nearly twice as good as the 30Gb one. And at last you really can trust that battery measurement!

Finally took the plunge and upgraded from my old 20GB 3G ipod that i've had for 3 years.

I was surprised by how small the packaging on the new ipod was. The lack of accesories is money hungry by apple but apart from that, the pod is great. My old 3G charger works fine but my old iTrip is now obselete sadly. So far, i've maneged to put about 30gb of music and podcasts on and am chuffed to bits. The sound quality is as good as ever and the battery life is amazing compared to the 4 odd hours that i'd get from my well used 3G one. I never use the standard ipod headphones, and they look pretty basic. I'd always urge anyone to buy a good quality headphone anyway for their mp3 player (i've got shure E3C's) They make such a difference.

The only thing i haven't got yet is an iSkin. Whilst the iSkins are perfect for keeping the ipod fingerprint and scratch free, i've yet to see one that will allow me to use the new style iTrip (using the dock connector) without having to remove it. I look forward to taking it on holiday with me in the summer and not having it run out half way through the flight!!

5 out of 5 stars Ipod - Top stuff!   June 17, 2007

First ever review of anything!! Here goes... Why is it so many people give ipods such a hard time in terms of reviews? It seems people either slate them or give them a glowing report - and I can't undertand why there is often a resentment toward Apple/Ipods.
I got my 80GB Ipod video in black (I do hate the traditional white that everything Apple has been till now) just recently, through Amazon.com, shortly before going to the States to visit family over there. Anyway, opened up the box, hands trembling with excitement, and there it was in glorious black - though the headphones and USB lead are still white. With my itunes library already filled with 10+ GB worth of music (both ripped from CDs and purchased from itunes), I connected the ipod to my laptop, and everthing was taken care of. Within forty-five minutes, my ipod was 'filled' with all my music. I soon purchased some music videos from itunes and they play fantastically, I recommend doing that! As I write this, my ipod is docked in my recently purchased JBL Onstage II, which is a superb piece of equipment (yeah, it's heavy for portability as is the 'plug' but who cares).

Okay, for you ipod haters, I haven't had my ipod long, but I have had no problems with it - not even any scratches, only finger prints on it. A good number of people do seem to be unfortunate enough to have their ipod go wrong straight away (and then curse all ipods and declare them useless), so I'm wondering if I am lucky or am speaking too soon on this.

I have owned a number of MP3 players but my new ipod is totally superior. A customisable equaliser on it would be good though. That said, I would point out something I have not seen mentioned anywhere by anyone, which is you can adjust the equaliser settings in the itunes library (click 'view' and choose 'show equaliser'), adjust the setting, give it a name to create a 'preset' and then assign that equaliser setting to your albums; right click tracks, choosing 'Get info' at the top of the list to bring up a window that has a little 'equaliser preset' window towards the bottom right corner. Click the arrow to show all the settings in the list - including the one(s) you created - select your preset and then click 'OK'. That sound setting will be applied to the selected tracks/albums. So you can have bass heavy or cleaner sound as you wish, and, get it wrong, you can do it again and again, and the ipod will re-load the music onto your ipod with the new setting.

Should I now experience problems with my ipod having totally praised it, I will write another review!!! Thanks for reading this one!

This is the 4th MP3 player I have bought and without doubt the best one yet. I have traditionally been an iRiver fan but have realised I can ignore the iPod no more and am delighted with my purchase. The price was very cheap but the product certainly isnt. Excellent value for money.

With iPod you know what you are going to get and this does not disappoint. Navigation is very easy, iTunes is user friendly, songs are easy to download. In fact, it is difficult to find a major fault with it. If I was being ultra critical then the screen could be bigger but then the whole unit would need to be bigger also and the present size of the screen does not detract from the quality.

One frustrating thing is that you are kind of encouraged to buy videos from iTunes and I wish it was much easier to simply pop a DVD in the computer and transfer this to the iPod but alas this is not so. I have had to download some software to convert some avi files to mp4 files and even then, some of them do not play. Apple have certainly not made it easy to download/watch video unless this is bought from Apple.

On the other hand there are lots of free video podcasts that can be subscribed to for free and when you come to view them there can be some good, free viewing entertainment (as well as audio podcasts).

With 80GB I suspect most people willl be struggling to fill it although will happily spend time attempting to do so.
