Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The Stunning iRiver Clix 2 redefines the portable media player! The Clix 2 is a further refinement of iRiver s excellent U10 player. It s the device which debuted the 'Direct Click' functionality which re-wrote the rules on how you interact with a media player. It s so intuitive that even the least technically able will pick up the player and start using straight away. Clix 2 expands on the U10 in every direction but most notably in it s use of AMOLED technology for the player display. AMOLED is a new technology which does away with the usual backlight of an LCD display. With AMOLED the pixels themselves emit light as opposed to LCD which has a colour mask over a backlight. What this means is incredible brightness with a huge viewing angle. The screen on the Clix 2 measures 2.2 inches and displays 320 X 240 pixels making it pin-sharp as well. Intuitive iriver D-click System It also ensures comfortable usage with iriver D-Click System which is operated by clicking the screen in four directions and UI (User Interface) that is intuitive and easy to control. The D-Click system is exclusive to iriver. Multiplayer Clix Clix 2 really is a media player not just an MP3 player. It ll play your audio along with full speed 30fps video photographs and it has an FM radio. There are a host of other options like the game mode as well. Speedy Flash UI and Theme Skin One of the real usability hits of the Clix 2 is the fact it s so quick to respond. There s no lag at all between pressing the screen and the operation happening this means you can quickly get used to speeding through the menus and using it becomes second nature. Also the skins are totally customisable. We have dozens already on our Forum which means you can personalise the player to your taste. 1. Music The Clix 2 is probably the best sounding MP3 player on the market today. That s a big claim to make but we re confident that you ll agree when you hear it. It ll play a wide variety of file

Taking this out the box, you can't help but mouth to yourself "wow". It is very light, compact and slim.
Menu's and options are very easy to navigate without referring to the manual, as is the connection to your computer.
Screen can get a little mucky from fingerprints (what mp3 player stays clean!) I highly recommend the leather case to help protect the unit from scratches.

The screen itself isn't touchscreen, its iriver's "d-click" system. Basically the outer sides of screen (yes the top, bottom and side panels) are the navigation buttons themselves. Very easy to use and straightforward, since the player usually has a symbol next to which part of the button you need to press to move on. Only thing for anyone taking this jogging and wanting to forward to next track, you may "nudge" the pause instead ^_^ not a big deal as its only one more click to resume.

Working the software is very straightforward, just a simple select the songs you want located on your computer and just drop them into the player with the software that comes bundled with the unit.
I did find it a little weird that mp3's could not be dragged onto the unit itself and then played (I might have missed something with regards to this)

Video's I use "iriveter" instead of there bundled stuff, since it handles the conversion much better. Oddly enough the videos that have been converted can be dropped anywhere in the player via windows explorer and they work straight away.
In fact any files types can be stored on the unit since it doubles as a flash drive too. Seems to be only mp3 files that won't play on the unit itself if you just drag them in and not use the default software.

The flash games are pretty nice and smooth and you can readily drop more "compatible" games onto this. More a novelty thing then anything else.

Batteries which I really don't like having to use, is not a chore with this unit. Since it uses the in-built lithium usb charge type. I've managed to squeeze 29 hours out of this, on low screen brightness and screen off, during its playback. Video playback is around 5 and half hours, if you run it on low brightness mode and don't play around on the controls too much :p

Since I can't program in flash, you could change its whole menu and interface, which is a novel feature, but the in-built preset themes and menus are more than adequate.

Image viewing is very good, it automatically resizes any images you have on the unit, but it will pause slightly if you have larger resolution/format images.

The sound quality is to iriver's usual high standards, although the headphones are adequate, if your a music quality enthusiast, i'd get some better headphones :)

This is one of the best little gadgets I have, I would whole heartedly recommend to anyone who is looking for something eye catching, smart and just plain works elegantly and simply, best buy in a long while for me.

I LOVE it! So happy I purchased it, I am so surprised that so little people (including myself before I started research) know about the iRiver Clix2. It has amazing reviews everywhere and they are well deserved I can assure you.

Picture quality is amazing, as is the sound. As soon as I opened it I played the preloaded sample videos, which feature flashy sports cars zooming around and a music video - it looked very good indeed. The picture was superb, the colours vivid and a great sound to match. It has been said that the sound quality is on par with Sony, however I own a Sony mp3 (with Sony headphones) and I actually think the iRiver is better, if only by a fraction.

The games you get with it are fun and you can download hundreds more online, as it is flash based and with the easy drag and drop system, all you have to do is download a game and pop it into the right folder. You can also do the same with themes, which changes the display of the device and its menus. There are many of these available online too and can be used via drag and drop. There are some very cool ones about, you just have to find it in the right place.

The whole look and feel of it is sleek, cool and very modern. It was smaller than I expected (I'd say it is slightly smaller than a credit card and as thick as a pack of gum, roughly). It's just about big enough not to feel like you will really easily lose it and small enough to be sleek and make you look cool =)

Also the fact that it has FM radio is a plus, with the added bonus of being able to record radio clips if you want too. You can even record your surroundings, as there is a built in microphone, which I don't really have a need for, but maybe good for any journalists, etc.

Simple to use - scroll up and down menu, click right to select, left to go back to last screen. There is also a button on the side that can be programmed to be a shortcut of your choice, ie. it can be menu, pause/play, shuffle, etc (can't remember them all). The software is relatively simple, you select files you want to add and then click upload and wait. I did about 150 tracks, which took about 3 minutes to transfer. You can also play tracks from the device through the computer, which is good for me after years of using the useless Sony SonicStage.

The D click system works very well. It is very simple: the four sides of the whole main panel (with the screen in the middle) ARE the buttons. This has the benefit of leaving more room for the screen and makes it look very sleek and minimalist.

I normally am quite loyal to Sony products, but am a bit tired of the complicated software and inconvenient menu systems. What's the alternative? Ipod. Ipod. Ipod. Generic, poor sound quality and in my opinion, boring. The iRiver Clix2 is a refreshing input into the portable audio world and I am proud to be an owner!

After reading all the raving reviews, of which there are many, I was still sitting on the fence about it. If you are still sitting on the fence, I'd suggest you do what I did and search for some user reviews on youtube where you can see it in action for yourself. There are a lot of people who have filmed their own review and show the camera all the features. Watch a couple and you may be spurred to just buy it there and then just like I did.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful but not ideal for docking in the kitchen   March 8, 2008

We've been trying to win back surface space in our house. Part of our plan was to rip all of our CDs and get them onto MP3 or equivalent. In the event, we went with Windows Media Player formats, because that works nicely on our PCs and the file size of the Microsoft format (WMF) was better than MP3, though it isn't as portable as MP3.

You won't catch me often with headphones on, but I was drawn to the idea of an iPod-ish MP3 player, because I'd seen other people's kitchens, where they docked their iPod with a small set of speakers and used less surface space then our trusty old radio/cassette/CD player, which is vying for position with various kitchen appliances. Getting a portable WMF player, which spends most of its time in the kitchen, seemed like a smart move - especially if you can load a ton of songs on it.

Going the WMF route made iPods less attractive - you can do it, but it is messy - so we focused on alternatives that support WMF and the iRiver Clix2 8GB looked to be head and shoulders above the rest of the flash players. 8GB is a lot of space for songs and flash means no moving parts means less to go wrong, better battery life and - oh yes - skip free (I don't really use it with headphones much). It is delightfully small and uses all available space very cleverly and intuitively. You are essentially handling a very clear display with click-able edges.

There are some glitches in the software. I was disappointed that album covers didn't copy across when I sync-ed with Windows Media Player, but I understand that they should have done. Also setting up presets in the radio is clumsy (we tend to leave it tuned to one station though). However, you can upgrade the firmware over the Internet, using the iRiver software; it is dead easy and your Clix 2 gets a bit better every time the firmware is upgraded. So if there are things which are less than ideal for you, you will find that they quite likely get fixed over time.

I have only one grumble, though, and that's the messiness of my docking set-up. The Clix 2 has its USB on one edge and its headphone socket on another. So you recharge the device on one side and get music out of it on the other. That sets a challenge for a docking station design, which needs to connect to both edges. I went with an iSound for docking + recharging. The speaker quality is nice enough for the kitchen and a fair price at 20 from Amazon. The Clix 2 is mounted by its headphone jack (you get a male-to-male adaptor that acts as a plinth) and you change the display orientation of the Clix 2 from landscape to portrait (easily done) and it looks elegant with a nice small footprint. But you are not recharging.

To recharge you need to get a USB connected into its top edge. The iSound gives you a USB socket, but you have a messy wire looping round into the top when you are recharging. That USB lead is yet another thing to find a home in the kitchen. In an ideal world there would have been some need little DC jack beside the headphone jack and it would be able to recharge via the plinth. Happily its battery life is very good so you don't need to faff around with the USB too much.

Overall, I am delighted with this device. It is a great bit of kit.

5 out of 5 stars Small package, big design   August 4, 2008

I have wanted the Clix 2 8GB since its release and now the price has reduced from 180 I decided to treat myself and buy one from Amazon.

The Clix 2 is smaller than I expected but very impressive. The screen is amazing as you can see it from any angle (unlike LCD's). The sound is brilliant when teamed up with Sennheiser PX200 headphones or with Harman Kardon Soundsticks for around the house (both bought on Amazon). I found clicking the edges of the player to navigate very easy and haven't had to keep referring to the manual.

Have only viewed the preloaded videos and have yet to add any of my own so can't comment on how well this works. I have however added my own photographs which I compressed first and the quality is great when viewed on the small screen. There are various wallpapers to choose from as a background and most of them are wow.

Had problems with the provided software iriver plus 3 when ripping CD's as the add album info feature didn't work. Eventually found that ripping CD's using Windows Media Player and using the Find Album Info feature then downloading them onto the Clix 2 using iriver plus 3 worked very well, if a bit slow. When trying to use WMP to synch with Clix 2 it kept crashing so using both applications seems unavoidable for me at least.

Despite the software problems (I have found shortcomings in most) I would thoroughly recommend this player. My daughter has a Creative Stone Plus but when she saw and tested my Clix 2 she immediately wanted one! I make sure I hide it now when I'm not around....it's not for sharing!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome bit of kit   March 13, 2008

I've only had it a couple of days but it's so good I decided to write my first Amazon review.

The menu system is really easy to use - once you realise you can press and hold the right side to access the deeper menus. The screen is beautifully colourful and detailed and videos look great.

Drag and drop of pictures/music/videos files using the USB is simplicity itself as you just drop them into the Pictures/Music/Videos directory on the Clix and you don't have to install any software to be able to use it. I have not been able to convert videos taken with my Canon Ixus camera yet using either of the provided converters but there are other 3rd party converters that claim to support iRivers. Other AVIs and WMVs have worked fine.

Sound through the included headphones is good but a bit tinny as highlighted by an earlier reviewer but I have yet to try it with a decent pair because I lost my last Sony in-ear phones with my previous MP3 player.
