5 out of 5 stars A marked improvement on the 1st Gen   October 23, 2008

If you have the 1G, is it worth upgrading to the newer version?

Well, I think so, yes. But only if the differences are as useful to you as they are to me. I had the 1G (my first ever Apple product!), for a couple of weeks before upgrading to the 2G. I then upgraded again to a larger capacity and I think this model is definitely an improvement on the 1G iPod Touch.

Size/Shape: I found the square edges of the 1G slightly uncomfortable in my hand - nothing major, but something I was always aware of. The 2G edges are slightly curved and it fits more easily in my palm.

There's also an external volume button. Call me lazy, but the fact is it's faster and more convenient to be able to adjust the volume with one press of a button. I really like having this little extra.

Battery life: It's noticeably longer, although not quite the extra 14 hours quoted. I'm getting around 8 hours more compared with the 1G - but to be fair, I do play around with it a lot. If you want to maximise battery life when you're just listening to music, then switch OFF the wifi... and you'll squeeze at least another 4 hours out of it. It makes a lot of difference.

Other extras: A built-in speaker and future compatibility with a microphone input. Okay, the speaker is very basic and tinny - but it's fine if you just want to listen to a song sample, for example.

Sound quality: I bought it mainly for the wifi and video capabilities as I have a Sony and Zune for music, but I loaded a few albums on, and I'm not sure if it's my imagination or not, but the 2G seemed to sound a little better than the 1G, with a fuller presentation. It's still very neutral though, and I don't think I'd like to use it with a pair of analytical earphones like Etymotic or q-JAYS. Also, I'm not that impressed with the eq presets, so I just leave them off. But the sq is not nearly as bad as I'd been led to believe.

Ease of use: It's simple! The touch screen is very responsive and it's easy to personalise the home screen and make it your own. If you want to change the appearance and move your applications around - simply hold down one of the icons for a few seconds, wait till they start 'shaking', and drag the icon to where you want, then 'set' it by pressing the home button.

wifi/video: Both features work very well for me. Video display is clear, bright, and big enough to avoid any eye strain. And the wifi is fantastic. I can check for new emails and browse the internet without even having my computer switched on. It's so convenient that it's hard to think how I ever lived without it :)

A tip! To turn off the Touch completely, make sure you press down and hold the sleep/wake button at the top until the 'Power Off' message appears. Otherwise, it is still on and using up battery.

To summarise: A very nice improvement on the 1G. An external volume control, longer battery life, curved edges, and built-in speaker make this even more fun to use than before.

UPDATE! Still loving it, but I noticed how quickly the screen became smudged, so I bought an Apple anti-glare screen protector. It's really good. Not only does it stay smudge free, but it's a lot easier to swipe because it doesn't retain the grease from your fingertips. And in bright sunlight, there's no glare at all. It makes it even nicer to use :)

5 out of 5 stars my first ipod   November 19, 2008

my ipod touch is my first ipod and i love it. infact i think i am turning into Gollum as "it is precious to me"!!

good points

it is a beautiful device, easy internet and email access (took about 1 minute to connect to my wifi and email on aol) has very good quality YouTube access, thousands of applications (some free) to download, and iTunes has masses of music, music videos, TV programmes and movies. there is little better than catching up with all the episodes of battlestar gallactica in the bath! video and sound quality are very good.

bad points

i have spent quite a bit on accessories like composite cables to connect to my TV (quality very good on playing videos and movies).
itunes wont recognise my touch on my main desk top so having to use the kid's one upstairs - a real pain as i have to keep transfering my new music and tv programmes by portable hard drive and itunes if you have never used it before on a PC isnt that easy, several times on sync it wiped stuff off i wanted to keep on and i had a bit of a job getting it back again. eventually managed but it wasnt a pleasure! the apple troubleshooting guide for touch that is recognised by windows but not by itunes isnt that easy to follow and involves downloading removal tools from microsoft etc, which you shouldnt have to do when you are paying 250 pounds for the 32 gig one.

conclusion

despite a few problems with itunes i LOVE my touch and would recommend it fully. it sounds a bit daft but it is so beautifully made you actually feel proud owning it! ummm can i resist buying a music centre with a docking station???

Super product, have updated from a shuffle for Apple and a Sony Walkman (which I loved).

But this - this is fantastic - love books from Audible and to get them on the Sony was one big hassle - but with Apple products soooooo easy. And how many can I get on?? No more running out of space and books when I work away.

Connecting to wifi - easy - can't believe what a super piece of kit it is - although perhaps it should be for the price!

Even got two of my favourite games on it from the apps store - not bought music yet but they have a couple of songs there that I've been looking for for a while - see how we go!

5 out of 5 stars Apple's flagship got a little better   October 7, 2008

The apple iPod touch 2nd gen model is pretty much perfect, 32gb is plenty of storage for most people, the screen is stunning and very high resolution so video playback is stunning. Audio has improved over the 1st gen model which is very welcome. Although I wish Apple would ship better quality headphones with their top of the range product. The headphones are lifeless and don't do the machine any justice, owning a good set like the CX55 range will improve your listening pleasure a great deal. The external volume controls are very welcome as is the built in speaker (its tinny but useable for gaming)

The touch screen is up to Apple's high standard and is very responsive, it becomes second nature once you have used it for a short time. The Mail, Calender, Safari browser and other apps are great and thanks to the app store you can add many more games and applications to turn your media player into a mini computer.

This is a quality product and beautiful to use and to look at, it is worth getting a decent set of earbuds and a good case to protect your iPod.

Overall this is the perfect iPod, and one device I am very proud to own.

I purchased this expecting it to be pretty good (well you would if your shelling out that amount of dosh ! )This thing is truly awesome ! I have a PSP and a DS and this is way way better the games are just great and very inexpensive some free some as little as 59p wow. The play back of movies is crystal clear and music is awesome better than the 80gig classic I sold to get this. Web browsing is great even on a small screen due to the touch screen allowing zooming etc. The browser is very speedy . not slow like a mobile phone. Everyone who I have shown this to is buying an iTouch or saving to buy one. Can't really say anything negative. It's the dogs !
