Archos do it again! December 9, 2008 R. Cartwright (UK) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Now had my new 7 for a week, so here we go! To some people, it will seem a lot of money to blow on a portable media player, but believe me, this baby does so much more. It plays just about every type of music and film files you can think off, yes there is a cost to play MPEG2 video, AC3 audio, and the new H.264 MPEG4 format and AAC audio files, with all so high def to be released soon, but this is the future of better things to come. Forget Blue Ray, because it will be a thing of the past very soon, Hard drive format is becoming the leader in the race for versatility in watching, recording and playing of all your media needs. This is now my sixth Archos and very pretty it is, with its smooth lines, well built casing and as the same as all the rest, very easy to use. Screen: An improvement from the 704 and 705 with a better screen resolution, and with more adjustment on back lighting and other controls in the menu bar. Internet: Seems to pick up Wifi better than before, with the new 3.5 dongle soon to be available for using Internet on the go, (mind you! plenty of people out there, who don't lock there Wifi, so picking up someone else's, is simple ) and works fine at Airports etc. Add Ons: With GPS, TV, Radio and a Bullet Cam for those Extreme nutters!!! there is plenty to go on with. Things you might not know: You can load up free games from the Internet and by pass the Archos web site, also with a the docking station, you can record from your sky box and watch another channel at the same time, just like the sky plus box, but with no cost, its all one touch recording. Why only four stars?: Most people will moan about the cost of Add-ons to play certain media files, but this can be rectified with Virtual Dub,( Archos are just trying to keep the price down)so I have to take other peoples comments into consideration, also there is no case, but its not a great loss, your soon realise you will need to fork out on a good strong one soon. With one more consideration? the Ipod Touch ok! It does almost the same as the Archos, but with a few things to think about, 1. Ipod is very expensive, for a small 32 gig drive compared to the 160 on the Archos. 2. The screens are somewhat! different ...lol Its your choice !!!!!!! Ok? There is so much to praise this French company, that I could go on forever with this review, but basically my advice would be, buy it, go put your DVD player, VHS player, Radio on Ebay, cancel your subscription with Sky and live happy ever after.
Archos and General Motors... or a great item made mediocre! November 23, 2008 Dcee3 (Bethel, CT USA) 25 out of 26 found this review helpful
Why is it companies make such bad decisions? Don't the companies decision makers get paid 6 figure salaries? Yes, I have an Archos 7. Here is a run down from boot up: You have to register and create and account with Archos to be able to use the Web and Web Radio(?)"plug-in". I now go to the internet to be able to watch episodes of THE OFFICE - it will not play any episodes - you get a blank space with a Flash 9 jpg. The Archos 7/Opera is suppose to support Flash 9 -but it doesn't work on many Flash 9 websites. Well -on to YouTube -YES it plays YouTube videos and very nicely I might add! I click on a The Office video... it says can not play this video -you need to download the "Podcast AAC" plug-in! So I click on the "Buy" button and I'm taken to a page that says "Coming Soon". I go to the Archos website and after a little of a struggle I find the Buy the plugins page. There is the "Podcast" plug-in FOR $19!!!!! NEXT... I'll try to play some of my dvd movie files on my laptop.. WUPS - I need another plug-in to do this ANOTHER $19 -WOW that added $40 to the $439 I just paid for the Archos 7! Where is the $30 for three plug-ins that everyone talks about -NO WHERE TO BE FOUND. Oh well I'll see if I can buy the "HiDef Video" plug-in -- WUPS - the "Buy" button doesn't say Buy it says "Out of Stock" now that is interesting -a software plug-in that is Out of Stock! They ran out of software! Thats scary -what will that mean in the future? What version of Linux is run on the Archos 5 and 7? Will we be able to install or download different apps of our choosing (like the Nokia N810)? DVR Station will be another $99... WOW... I may be up to $600 if I keep this unit... Now if us little people see the problems so easily (especially the $19 plug-ins CHOKE!!) why can't a six figured salaried idiot make some better decisions about a product that could have such potential to be great? My recommendation don't buy one of these until: 1. Plug-ins are free. Shouldn't this be a no brainer? 2. Flash 9 is completely supported. 3. The add-ons are more reasonably priced. 4. Software for the unit is not "Out of Stock" Don't forget $600 will get you a 15" laptop!
