5 out of 5 stars Just got the Archos 705 80gb   February 11, 2008

I tried to read as many reviews as possible before buying the archos 705 80gb from Amazon, but could not find many actual owner reviews so I thought I would add mine for anyone considering one of these.
Firstly my concerns: I was worried because I could not find one anywhere to see it in action before buying, only saw the 605 which was great, but I wanted the larger screen for video. I was worried the 260,000 colour screen would not be as good as the 605's 16 million colours and other reviews that said the screen is not as sharp on the 705. After a couple of days playing around with mine I can say the colours are fine (can you amagine 20,000 different shades of red?). I have not tried it side by side with the 605, but photos and video look great and the 7" screen is great - no eye strain at all.
What else can I say?
I think having the touch screen only (no buttons) works well - less to risk breaking - and you get a good remote if you want to avoid touching the screen. The touch screen is not as good as the ipod touch but works well enough once you get used to it.
The movies I had recorded on my PC's TV card went on in less than 5 minutes each, even for 3gb files with DVD resolution and they look really clear on the screen. It used to take a couple of hours to encode and transfer these onto my PSP.
Yes, the the optional DVR station cost you extra, but it works well - unfortunatley it only records TV at 640 by 480 resolution which is a shame when the screen is capable of more - I dont know if it will be capable of better with HD broadcasts. At least it records from a freeview box and from your DVD player - even protected discs, but these will only play on the device not onto your TV or PC - fair enough, I just want to be able to take a good movie when I am away from home not pirate copy it. The DVR station is also very good at playing your recordings and photos back on a large TV screen.
Music sounds good, but lets face it this thing is to big to replace your MP3 player. The built in speakers are okay too, a bit tinny but okay if you want to bin the ear buds for a bit.
Using the wifi to web browse is pretty good and video like you tube automatically plays at full screen size.
I am still experimenting with its capabilities - if I think of anything else I will add another review here. To finish off I would say I am very pleased with it so far and I am glad I went for the 705, I am prepared to carry the extra size and weight for the quality of the larger screen.
Finally I ordered it from Amazon on free delivery and it turned up three days later, great stuff - don't bother paying for express delivery.

4 out of 5 stars Good but some downsides   November 6, 2008

If you're looking for something that can play videos on a decent screen and music, this is a strong candidate. The 705 has a decent screen quality and the it's big. The wifi works fine and it's good to be able to play videos remotely (e.g. if you have more videos than can fit on the local hard drive).

Downsides:
- You can't plan MPEGs/some audio formats unless you buy a codec from them (it plays DivX, XVID, and MPEG3 though).
- You can't play online videos such as Youtube (no workaround for this one).
- The screen isn't very finger friendly.

1 out of 5 stars great if it wasn't for the fatal flaw   January 27, 2008

I bought the 160gb version with TV docking station that was supposed to have the manual and registration instructions on the drive. However they were not there, and there was no help on archos site. After a week of trying I eventually found out how to purchase the plug in for web browser and set up my archos account. I gradually learnt how to use it. the touch screen is NOT finger friendly, it's slow but audio sound is great through h/p and even a 3 lead into my amp. I began to fall in love with the look and feel of this device and the ability to watch video streamed from youtube n google video as I walked around the house etc. I went to bed each night streaming films. however they always cut out after ten minutes. I thought i was being dumb. Again there was no help on website or manuals and only by trial and error did I find it needed to be plugged in to ac adaptor to watch a whole video, which defeated the whole wi-fi and portability aspects of it. Not only that, you also need it plugged in when synching with wmp11. If you like your audio don't rip WMplayer in lossless or anything else as archos forces a downgrade to standard wma which takes forever. corrupt files are common too.
Here's the crunch, I never got as far as setting up my bundled dvr station or other extras as on day 12 FATAL ERROR recovery error 102 none of the restore options worked. The archos site had never heard of that error (which turned out to be lies)and couldn't help me. The device felt weighty and of good build quality so i thought i must have been unlucky and got a duff hard drive. Not so!! The flash drives suffer the same problem and there are thousands of people on the forums with the same problem with no resolution but to RMA. I've decided grudgingly to wait for a larger capacity iTouch. The bricked archos remains by the door a month later waiting to be collected, and needless to say i ain't got my money back yet. It was great while it lasted but i'd never by another. Invest in a sonos for audio or just by a small cheap laptop for the same price for video without paying extra for every bit of added functionality.
