5 out of 5 stars Best yet   April 13, 2007

I have had this iPod a few weeks and if it was possible I would give it in excess of 5 stars. It is very easy to use and I have now put most of my music and photos on it. Having tried various makes and types this by far the best. My age is 78 years and if I can find it easy to use then the younger generation should have no trouble. I agree that one should obtain screen covers (which are quite cheap and also the leather cover) Well done Apple.

5 out of 5 stars sounds better than the nano   March 12, 2007

something I didnt know....the 30gb sounds better than a nano when you connect them to speakers. I tried a variety of speakers and sound-docks and found a difference in sound quality. Very happy with this product and its a never ending story when it comes to downloading music onto this little device. But be careful with finger print smudges especially on the black colour!

5 out of 5 stars iPod - I've been waiting all my life!!   April 13, 2007

This is a seriously brilliant piece of kit.
As someone whose devotion to music goes back over forty years it's unbelievable that I can carry round in my pocket all my favourite albums, and quite a few of the second, third & fourth rank choices as well. I suppose that I could have sprung for the 80GB model which would hold my entire collection, but that smells a bit of overkill, the 30GB model holds in excess of 500 albums.
No more agonising over what CDs to take on holiday, and then regretting the choice when I get there, they're all here in this tiny package, I wish I had been able to own this since the sixties!!
I can't envisage that I would ever want to watch a film on a two and a half inch screen so I don't really care about the video capabilities, it's the music I bought it for, and it performs brilliantly.
It's beautiful to look at and easy to use and sounds good. Luckily my new car has an auxiliary connection for the iPod so I guess I'll have to organise some playlists for longer journeys.
All in all I am delighted with my choice, and the service from Amazon, I ordered the iPod on a Thursday lunchtime, it arrived at 7.30 the next morning, so five stars to Amazon as well as Apple.
BTW, I didn't have any of the predicted problems with compatibility with Windows Vista either.

5 out of 5 stars 99% Perfect   December 20, 2006

I'll start with the negatives because there are only two and both are minor. The case offers little protection and the iPod itself shows up every greasy finger mark... I'm forever trying to wipe them off.

Now for the positives. It's the most intuitive of all the mp3 players I've seen and makes finding any piece of music a breeze. Connecting and downloading from iTunes couldn't be simpler.

Like all mp3s it's worth investing in a pair of decent headphones (I went for the Sennheiser CX300s in black to match my iPod) and the sound quality is simply stunning. I was noticing instruments that I hadn't realised were there. I can't imagine what an even higher end of 'phones would make it sound like.

All in all an absolute beauty, and if, like me, all you want to use it for is to listen to music, 30gb should be more than enough for most people.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent buy.   December 22, 2006

I purchased this iPod back in May to replace my slightly old-but still extrordinary 4th Gen iPod, just so I could more or less be 'in date' with the iPod technology. I thought the iPod video looked ugly when I first saw it, due to the large screen and the shrunken clickwheel, but the looks grew on me. And the possibility of owning a black iPod was amazing.

Lookwise, it's a piece of art, sleek, beautiful and simply detailed. The new style of the front casing annoys me a bit, I prefer the sides to be smooth, but it's bareable. Unfortunatley the new casing also means that it's even easier to scratch it, it seems that even by LOOKING at the iPod you scratch it. I've had mine in a full case since the day I bought it, and still it manages to look scratched. The black iPods show this more than the white.

Pushing looks aside, what can I say? This is an amazing product. I've been using iPods for around two and a half years now, and everytime I use any other MP3 player, I'm reminded of just how amazing the iPod is. It's very easy to use, thanks to the touch-sensative clickwheel, which makes scrolling through long lists of albums/songs/artists so much easier. The sound quality is EXCELLENT, so excellent in fact, that I find it hard listening to things on computers/other MP3 players because the quality isn't as crisp as that of the iPod's.

The screen is beautifully well lit and clear, displaying album art work, pictures, and video with excellent clarity. I haven't actually put video's on my iPod yet, because it sounds like quite a complex thing to do, which is one let down with this iPod, the instructions aren't exactly very helpful. But this wasn't an important feature in my purchase. The battery life is excellent compared to my old iPod, which would last 6 hours or so, now I can get 10 or more hours quite easily. Obviously the backlight eats up the battery. And so I should imagine that watching videos could give you around an hour of battery time before it needs to be recharged. One thing that nags me a little about the iPod is how after it hasn't been used for a few days, it will take a little longer than usual to start up, just showing the apple logo while it loads. But this isn't a big problem at all - it only lasts a minute maximum!

I never used the case that came with the iPod, because to me, it seemed ridiculous. A light colour - meant it could easily get stained. And it really didn't seem to offer any protection. To see the screen, you'd have to get out the iPod each time, which is annoying! It also means that the iPod is far more likely to be covered in scratches and finger prints, which could be ok for some, but I like to ensure that my iPod is well protected. So I'd advise you purchase a good iPod case to avoid damaging the gadgets beauty, not to mention the gadget itself. There are plenty of excellent cases out there so it shouldn't be hard.

The application used to transfer songs to the iPod (iTunes) is amazing. It's very easy to use, straight-forwards, organized and makes transferring music onto the iPod a simple 'task'. Songs are transferred quickly, which is good because you don't have to sit around for hours waiting for your iPod to be updated.

All in all, this is one purchase I've never regretted. At the time of buying it was much more expensive, so the price now isn't a 'rip off' as some people claim. An excellent quality product that I don't really have anything negative to say about. If you're not that interested in buying this item because you think it's become too much of a fad and that it's not really a good product, then think again. It may be a fashion trend right now, but it's also a reliable product.
