Archos 605 WiFi - excellent September 25, 2007 keefnet (UK) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
OK, had this about a week. Transferred all my Archos AV560 files to it, setup the WiFi to connect to share on my home PC and also surf the internet directly thorugh my broadband router. Also hooked up the DVR station to view on TV. Display - awesome. 800*480 resolution. Videos and photos super, web browsing excellent - can zoom in when needed. OK, not the fastext browser but very good. Even youtube videos working. Travelling this week so took the travel battery/AV adapater - hooked it up to the hotel room TV in France using AV lead supplied with SCART adapter... they have limited UK telly so watching Alien Vs Predator in English -- great. Only let down is no remote for the travel adapter. Back to the home DVR base station, the remote os great - full qwerty keyboard..... OK for response - just don;t type too quick. 160GB --- great capacity. Now, I had a 504 for a short while but the startup time seemed too long for me. This 605 has standly mode so startup is really quick.... a few seconds. If needed, can shutdown for a full reboot on power up by holding power key for several seconds. I had to do it a couple of times as I think it had problems with my bookmarks last night but seems fine after a reboot and now fine also. I have to add I got a great deal on QVC - the unit+DVR+battery/dock+Web Browser add-on..... whereas normally you have to purchase them all seperatly. Being gadget mad.... this is really cool. My AV560 mint condition will be on ebay in the next week or so! For reference I use Xilisoft DVD to Divx encoder - cheap and great at encoding although now with the higher resolution supported I need to select AV700 output and change the default 720*480 to 800*480. This does eat CPU utilisation so if you have a dual core processory, you're better off.
Fantastic bit of kit April 20, 2008 Tim1 (London) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this from Amazon about 3 weeks ago - which coincidentaly, is the same amount of time it takes to fall in love with it! I got it after a lot of background research to meet two needs - replace my now aging Creative Zen (the really old ones) and as a keen photographer, so that I could download images from my camera as backup whilst out and about. This needs to be done via an additional dock (which also supports mains charging)but is money well spent - you can view your Jpeg images immediately on the incredible screen and it will hold RAW images for downloading to your computer later. Sound - I'd never use the headphones that come free with these things, but with a decent pair the sound is full and dynamic. Well, I've mentioned the screen - and yes - it really is incredible (but get a proper protector for it). Video playback is simply superb - the only limitation will be the rate you use to encode. The touch screen capabilities make searching for what you want to listen to or watch so much easier than any other method. It's hard to describe just how much easier it makes everything, but Archos seem to have always ensured that the right amount of information or options are available on the screen at any time. Then there are the games - of course the ones you can buy and download from the Archos website - but this device also supports flash - which means you can download any number of games on it for free (Warning - Mah Jong games are incredibly addictive!) I've not used (and don't currently intend to) the internet or TV recording options etc so can't comment on them. This is such incredible value for money - I paid this for 60Gb of audio on a tiny text only screen not that many years ago. Now I have audio, video, picture viewing (and camera backup) and a wealth of games for the same price. Ok, so it's not the smallest player (if you want a screen and capacity like this then it won't be), OK so people will always find a complaint - yes it's got a proprietary USB cable as standard (well what about your iPod?), but I for one am very impressed with this kit and would happily recommend it with no reservations. Buy this now - you won't be disappointed.
Superb! June 14, 2008 C. Clements (South East, UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I admit to being a total gadget freak, and I bought this little gem because I spend 3 hours a day on a train. Even with my gadget dedication, I sometimes find the gadgets I buy a little too complicated, and often end up not using them as they should be used. Imagine then, my delight, when I discovered how easy the Archos is to use. I set it up to record programmes I don't have time for in the evenings and watch them on the way to work in the mornings. I've converted DVDs and loaded them onto the Archos, and I took the entire season of Huff with me on holiday - in case of bad weather. Being able to watch a full-length movie on a relatively short plane journey helps the time pass that much quicker. I use my Archos 605 (160G) every day, and I wouldn't be without it now. It's an absolute doddle to use, and does exactly what it 'says on the tin'. If you like to watch TV and DVDs away from home, and you want something portable and adaptable to your needs, look no further. I absolutely love mine.
Another Archos Knock-Out May 31, 2008 Mr. GJW Peace (United Kingdom) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Truly the best in Mobile Media. I used to have an Archos AV700 TV and I loved it! The 605 Wifi is something else. The capabilities it has is outstanding! You do have to pay for certain plugins but they are more specialist and even though you may pay quite an expense for them, they will be well used. This is Archos' 5th Generation. What will the 6th Generation bring?
Just don't expect miracles March 1, 2008 Pd Stewart (London) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have only recently got this player, I bought this to watch movies and tv shows downloaded from my computer. To do this the Archos is superb, the picture quality is excellant, sharp and well defined on the screen which is just about big enough for any movie. Downloading DVDs can be a bit tricky but i sussed it out quickly enough. To my mind all the extra features are just that - extras to the main event. As such they are excellant and really great. Don't expect this to be a mini PC - it's not, yes it does some web browsing, you can download movies and other content, and various other bits. Expect this to be a great movie player first and foremost and you'll not go far wrong, expect this to be something much more, you may not be impressed, for me it ticks all my requirements, marvellous!!!
